Centuries ago oranges were known as the “fruit of the Gods” and were depicted as “golden apples” in the story of Hercules and Titan Atlas. Oranges represent generosity, good fortune, prosperity, strength, wisdom and happiness. In China they are a traditional offering and gift, particularly popular at New Year to offer good fortune and prosperity to the recipient.

Lily of the Valley Origin & Characteristics
Oranges are the fruit from the Sweet Orange tree (Citrus sinensis) which is believed to have originated in Southern China. Historically, the first mention of sweet orange was in Chinese Literature dating back to 314 BC. The sweet orange tree does not grow in the wild anywhere in the world and is thought to be a natural hybrid between Pummelo (Citrus maxima) and the Mandarin (Citrus reticulata). It is a large evergreen tree, with an average height of approximately 9 to 10 m, and bears small white waxy flowers and vibrant orange coloured fruit. Incidentally, the colour orange was named after the fruit. The name “orange” is derived from the Old French and Anglo-Norman name for the fruit “pomme d’orenge”, itself adapted from the Arabic word “nāranj”, which in turn was from the Persian word “nārang”, from the Sanskrit word nāranga, meaning “orange tree”. During the 15th-century orange trees were brought back from China by the Portuguese, and introduced to Africa and Europe. Originally it was the medicinal benefits for which it was valued, but the sweet tasting fruit quickly gained popularity as a luxury item, and trees were cultivated by the wealthy and elite who grew them in conservatories known as “orangeries”. The grandest Orangerie was at the Palace of Versailles as Louis XIV had a great love for them, and orange trees in silver pots adorned the rooms of the palace also. Sailors were prone to a disease called scurvy (lack of vitamin C) which often killed up to 50% of the crew, so throughout the 15th-17th century, known as the Age of Discovery, the Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch sailors planted such trees along the trade routes, as eating oranges and other citrus fruits were known to decrease the illness significantly.

Orange oil has a long history in Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as in folk remedies throughout the Mediterranean, the Middle East and India, is used to enhance immunity, and relieve colds, flu and coughs, indigestion, chronic fatigue, spasms, depression, poor circulation and skin infections.
